Hawsons Chartered Accountants was founded in Sheffield in 1854 – more than 25 years before the creation of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales – by Alfred Allott and John Hewett.
The firm has since grown to become one of the UK’s leading independent accounting practices, with nearly 100 partners and staff across three UK offices, in Sheffield, Northampton, and Doncaster. Our clients, many of whom are long-standing, cover a broad range of types, sizes and business sectors. The partners at Hawsons are totally committed to remaining independent as we strongly believe this allows us to service your needs in the most effective manner. We help our clients expand and develop and deal with problems and opportunities as and when they arise.
Celebrating our 170th Anniversary year
In 2024, Hawsons is celebrating its 170th Anniversary. Hawsons was founded in Sheffield in 1854 and we are one of the longest-standing independent firms of chartered accountants in the UK.

We provide accounting services in Sheffield, Doncaster, and Northampton and act for individuals, sole traders, unincorporated businesses, partnerships, limited companies of all sizes and specialise in owner-managed businesses. Our mission is to provide our clients with service of the highest quality and value in a professional, friendly, and responsive manner, to assist them to develop their business, to develop the maximum potential of our people and thereby be the leading independent practice in our area. To ensure the highest standards of customer service and care, all members of our staff adhere to the firms’ client care and service initiative.
Our development
We have grown steadily to become one of the major independent accounting practices with valued experience in advising owner managed businesses. In late 2013 Hawsons merged with Holmes Widlake, a long established independent Sheffield firm of chartered accountants. In recognition of the growing demands and complexities of business life, we have developed a specialist structure designed to provide a positive and individual service to you. Applying a commercial focus to our expertise, we work with our clients helping them grow their businesses over the long term whilst also helping them achieve their personal financial objectives.
